How Long Can I Live On 11% Kidney Function

2013-07-11 15:43

How long can one live on 11% kidney function? When only 11% kidney function is left, dialysis will be recommended for kidney failure patients. Failed kidney can not discharge toxins out of the body, leading to buildup of toxins and various wastes in the blood. These harmful substances circulate with blood and may cause threat to any part of patients’ body. Dialysis helps to clear toxins and other wastes from the blood, which can help to protect other internal organs.

For kidney failure patients with 11% kidney function, it is hard to give them an exact number of their life span, but one thing is for sure and that is if dialysis is not applied timely, their life span will be reduced seriously. However, if they start dialysis, their survival rate at close to 80% through one year, 64% through two years and 33% after five years and 10% through 10 years.

Symptoms of kidney failure with 11% kidney function

For a kidney failure patient with 11% kidney function, they may experience various symptoms due to failed kidney functions and they are nausea, vomiting, itching skin, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, metabolic tastes in mouth, tiredness, pale look, muscle cramp, irregular heartbeat and even coma and so on.

Kidney failure is the most severe kidney condition which may involve all the body systems. Therefore, patients may experience various discomforts.

Treatment for kidney failure patients with 11% kidney function

Dialysis is the most commonly used medical method for kidney failure patients with 11% kidney function. It helps to lower serum creatinine level, and blood urea nitrogen level effectively and quickly, but disappointedly, the treatment effects are temporary, as dialysis can not repair injured kidney tissues. Besides, long-term application of dialysis will cause a series of side effects like headache, infection, low blood pressure, muscle cramp, itching and so on. Also, the longer time that patients do dialysis, the shorter the life span.

To prolong the life span effectively, kidney failure patients need to repair injured kidney intrinsic cells and recover kidney function. For kidney failure patients who only have 11% kidney function, effective recovery of kidney function will help them to reduce dialysis frequency. And also if their kidney function can be improved to 15%, it is possible for them to get off dialysis.

Besides, a scientific diet, proper fluid intake and tight control of kidney failure symptoms like high blood pressure, proteinuria, hematuria and anemia are also very essential for the successful prolong of life span.
