How To Increase Urine Output In Kidney Failure

2013-03-05 17:05

urine outputUrine is generated in the kidneys and under normal circumstances, 24-h urine output is about 1000-1500ml. Urinary changes are very common among kidney failure patients such as frequent urination, reduced urine output or even no urine at all.

Urine output is mainly up to the glomerular filtering function and tubular functions of concentration, dilution and reabsorption. When kidneys are damaged and kidney functions are affected, patients often have significantly reduced urine output. It is called oliguria when daily urine volume is less than 400ml and it is anuria when daily urine is less than 100ml.

Some illness conditions in renal failure can cause or worsen oliguria, treating the underlying cause can help increase urine output.

* Dehydration due to inadequate water intake, high fever, vomiting, diarrhea;

* Urinary tract obstruction

* Infections which can also cause burning sensation during urination

* Blood loss and shock

* Some drugs such as antibiotics, diuretics, anticholinergics, methotrexate

When there is significant decrease in urine output, metabolic wastes and toxins can not be discharged efficiently from the body and they can cause serious or even life-threatening consequences.

Besides treating kidney failure and the underlying causes, some natural herbs and foods are natural diuretics to help gradually increase urine output and recover normal urinary flow.

There are many foods in our daily life that can help increase urine flow-parsley, celery, melon, beets, cabbage, cucumber, carrots, onion, cranberry juice, lemon juice, etc. Having some proper supplement of these foods can help flush the kidneys and remove excessive water so as to increase urine volume.

Some herbs have natural diuretic properties such as dandelion, cornsilk, celery seed and uva ursi, ginger, juniper can help reduce water retention and increase urine output.

Of cause, the most simplest way is to drink more water if patients do not have serious swelling or high blood pressure due to water and sodium retention. Besides, avoiding eating high-salt and high-sugar foods.

For renal failure patients, only when renal functions are improved can reduced urination be treated from the root. Urine is always regarded as hope for renal failure patients and it means that there are still some renal functions and there is still chance to improve kidney functions with timely and proper treatments.
